The short answer: at the textbook 300 DPI, a 24×36 print needs 7200×10800 pixels — a 78-megapixel file almost nobody has. The real answer: large prints are viewed from further away, so 150 DPI is perfectly acceptable for big wall art, which puts a 24×36 within reach of any modern 24MP camera. DPI in 60 seconds
DPI (dots per inch — technically PPI for the file itself) is just pixels divided by print inches. A 6000-pixel-wide photo printed 20 inches wide is 300 DPI. The same file printed 40 inches wide is 150 DPI. Your photo doesn't "have" a DPI — it has pixels. DPI only exists once you choose a print size.
Two quality thresholds matter:
- 300 DPI — gallery standard. Sharp under close inspection. Use it for small prints people view at arm's length.
- 150 DPI — the practical floor for large prints. A 24×36 hangs on a wall and is viewed from 6–10 feet; at that distance 150 DPI and 300 DPI are indistinguishable to the human eye.
Below ~120 DPI, softness becomes visible even at wall distance. Don't ship it.

Translating megapixels into maximum print sizes:

The takeaway most sellers get wrong: a standard 24MP camera can sell every size up to 24×36 — the big sizes just ride the 150 DPI standard instead of 300. Since large prints carry your best margins, refusing to offer them because of the 300 DPI myth is leaving your most profitable sizes on the table.
One caveat before you list every size: order a sample of your largest offering first. "Acceptable at viewing distance" is a claim you want to verify with your own eyes, on the actual paper your POD provider uses.
Cropping eats your resolution
The math above assumes you use the full frame. Every crop subtracts:

- A heavy compositional crop — say to 60% of the frame — turns your 24MP file into an ~14MP file, and suddenly 18×24 at 150 DPI is your realistic ceiling.
Happy accident: 24×36 is exactly 2:3 — the native aspect ratio of full-frame and APS-C cameras. Your biggest, most profitable size is the one that needs zero cropping. (12×18 is also 2:3; 8×10 and 16×20 are the crop-hungry ones.)
When you're short on pixels: upscaling actually works now
If your file is a little under the line — an older 12MP body, a cropped composition, a drone shot — modern AI upscaling is legitimate for print work:
- Lightroom's Enhance → Super Resolution doubles both dimensions (4× the pixels) in one click and handles photographic detail well.
- Topaz Gigapixel and similar tools go further and offer more control.
A 2× upscale of a clean, sharp original prints beautifully. What upscaling can't fix: missed focus, motion blur, or heavy noise — it enlarges those too. Upscale good files, not broken ones.
File settings that bite print sellers
- Export at full resolution. Don't let a 2048px "web export" preset anywhere near your print files. Export original pixel dimensions, JPEG quality 90+ (or lossless).
- sRGB color space. POD printers assume sRGB; an Adobe RGB file printed as sRGB comes out flat and desaturated. Convert on export.
- No sharpening for screen. Use your editor's "sharpen for print" output if offered; screen sharpening halos become visible in ink.
